Staff from across Rostwa Engineers took part in National Cleaning Day activities, clearing litter, draining stagnant water points and tidying the public spaces around our working areas. It was not a complicated exercise. It was a group of people giving a few hours to leave a place better than they found it.

Small effort. Big impact.

Why this matters to an engineering firm

Construction changes land. That is the nature of the work. Every road, drainage line and structure we put up leaves a mark on the environment around it, and the question for any serious engineering firm is not whether that mark exists but whether it is one we can stand behind.

We have taken the view that environmental care is part of the job specification, not an extra that gets added at the end if there is budget left over.

What that looks like on our sites

Trees go back into the ground. On our projects, tree planting is part of how we close out a site. Where our work disturbs vegetation, we plant back. It is a simple practice, and over the years it has put lots of trees back into the communities where we build.

Lower carbon in how we work. We have been reducing fuel burn on our sites through better equipment scheduling, cutting idle machine time and sourcing materials closer to where the works are happening. Shorter haulage distances mean fewer trips, less diesel and a lighter footprint for the same quality of work.

Materials that make sense. We specify eco friendly and locally sourced materials wherever the design allows it, and we manage construction waste through separation and reuse rather than sending everything to a dump site.

Communities, not just clients. The places we work in are places people live. Our site teams engage surrounding communities on dust control, drainage and waste management, and days like today give us a chance to work alongside them rather than near them.

Cleaning days work best when they are not one day.

We would like to see more companies in the construction and engineering space treat environmental care as part of their delivery standard. The sector moves a lot of earth and a lot of material. That gives us real influence over the condition of the environment we hand to the next generation, and it is influence worth using well.
